When “more” isn’t the answer to “What do you want?”

W

For so many people, whether or not they will voice this, when asked “What do you want?” the (secret) answer is: “More”.

More money, more “stuff”, more house, more vacation, more whatever.

The thing is, when you get “more”, the answer still remains “more”.

I can remember 10 years ago figuring out my monthly budget. If I could generate that number, then I’ve made it.

I did hit that number, and then “more” became the answer.

I wouldn’t be able to live on that number from 10 years ago today. I’d lose everything I have.

But somewhere along the way I did manage to put in more concrete terms what a goal for me is. When I crossed that finish line, I made a deliberate choice to say “no more”.

I’m not going to look at bigger homes in richer neighborhoods. I love my house.

I’m not going to lust after more expensive cars when the one I have services us just fine.

I met my savings goals for my kids’ post secondary education. I have my fully funded emergency fund.

I’m not giving up what I’ve got, but I don’t need to chase “more” any longer.

So what is it then that I want?

I find myself turning back to my old rave desire… to change the world.

I can’t help but feel I have some unfinished business. In this splintered world of ours, I know there has to be better ways of creating connection, larger connection, not just tribal connection.

I know I have some unique experiences in doing so. Combined with a successful entrepreneurial run, I feel ready to take on “what’s next”. I also know the answers lie in something that hasn’t been done before.

I want to play a bigger game, and I’m now seeking others to play it with. That is now my answer to “what do you want?”

What that is specifically, I’m still working out, but I’m throwing lines in the water to see who else is out there.

This blog is part of that. Thanks for reading. If you drop “more”, what is your answer for “what do you want”?
