The benefits of picking a lane

T

So many people I encounter have innate human desires to “make the world a better place”, or “make an impact”, or “change the world”. What they are missing though is specificity.

“Pick a lane” is usually my invitation. Get really specific.

Once you do, a compass appears for you. Even if you don’t know HOW, or even IF (if you have an impossible goal), there’s somewhere to move towards (and a place for you to come FROM).

What if you want to make an impact beyond a single thing? Still pick a single thing. I care about more things than climate solutions, but I’ve picked that lane. Make a “Sophie’s Choice”.

And then start speaking it. With clarity. And see what happens. Within yourself, and for those connected to you.

Frolic 100 member Elaine (“Ln”) came across this book and thought of me (and sent the photo). This only happened because her brain now connects me with Nobel prizes. People connected to me now think of me around climate solutions and Nobel prizes! (Thank you to the MANY other Frolic 100 members who have forwarded me things this past year for the same reason) I have to let that sink in myself.

And here’s the paradoxical truth – my specificity has helped me empower others in their pursuits of what is important to them. I’m “making an impact” and “changing the world” – without that being the goal.

Get specific. Pick your lane. What’s your one thing?
