I read a lot of articles these days about maintaining a Work/Life Balance.
It’s good that people realize the importance of having a healthy life outside of their work. I’m not sure when it started to be looked at as more important, but it’s something I’ve always lived.
A friend of mine used to joke that I was “successfully underemployed” because my work week was not very full.
I never judged my work output by hours. I always judged it by tasks completed and goals achieved. As long as those were being met, then I was free to do what I like with the rest of my time.
I love the freedom I have being an entrepreneur. In the mornings I see my kids off to school, and I’m home when they get back. I’ve built multiple successful businesses over the years this way.
Part of this freedom is from working alone, and also not having taken on debt or investors. I never had to answer to anyone. My businesses then could be whatever size I wanted to support the life I wanted to live.
When I watch shows like “Shark Tank” and hear the stories of entrepreneurs sacrificing everything, their relationships, their family… that just hasn’t been my experience.
I realize this is counter the “growth at all costs” mindset people take on building a business.
I’ve never done that, and have always skewed heavily to the Life side of the equation.
What is the life you want to live, and how can you build your business to support that vision?
